Does anyone have a current phone # for Ken McGlothlen?

We had a plan, but now I haven't heard from him, and my current phone and computer don't have any # listed for him. . .

For those who might care :)
After a longer than planned hiatus, Brian and John is back up, in a new friendlier format. You can now page back and forth between comics, and the latest 4 blog posts show up at the bottom of the page. This includes the weekly(?) "caption this comic" feature. I'm now the de facto site administrator, which is scary, considering how little I grok this stuff.

Oh, well. I'm hoping that I'll actually get Friday's cartoon - and post it - sometime before I head out to the Ren Faire tomorrow!

And next week I hope to get the archive ported over, so we can revisit all the old strips. . .

A Renaissance weekend last year:
I just stumbled over this bit of footage that Ibba put together from the "Arcadia" weekend we had last year, after Ren Faire got cancelled. It was fun, except for the usual "too hot, too spread out, not enough minions" problems. :)

You'll see me and Nora at the 0:40 mark for about 2 seconds, and then Nora being adorable at 2:58.

The banner shown at the end is emblazoned with the Ravenrook motto, "Estis non digni" (You are not worthy). They love chanting that one at the Ren Faire, where no one knows any Latin. :)

So I bought a new dress.
And shoes to match.

OutfitLookingForOccasion
But I have no clue where I would wear this. It's great, and I love how I look in this style, but it's kind of the opposite of fashionable. I need to figure out how to embrace my inner Donna Reed, I guess. :)

In honor of a friend's good news!
I thought I would share this fine greeting card that Mr. [info]jamesernest made for me last year, when I had a similar situation:

. . . saw this forlorn sight, on the Clearance Rack at Target:

Speaks for itself, really.

Happy May 6th!
Today is my 45th birthday.

It is also the birthday of:
Maximilien Robespierre 1758 (no surprise there!)
Sigmund Freud 1856
Rudolf Valentino 1895
Orson Welles 1915
George Clooney 1961

Not to mention the anniversary of:
The Hindenburg Disaster 1937

Thanks, Alex - I think - for exposing me to this fine piece of artwork from BoingBoing.

It's right up there with "Fail Pig".

Happy May Day!
I love Julie Andrews. It's such a shame they didn't get her for the film. Here's an audio recording with photo-montage:

And don't forget, it's also International Labor Day!

Current Mood: chipper

Happy Earth Day, everyone!
I'm going to take a nap. . . then maybe I'll be able to enjoy the Earth Day-ness of it all.

(I was not happy to wake up at 5-something this morning, and not get back to sleep until after I hit the snooze-bar. Doh!)

Current Mood: tired. . .

Quote of the day:
From David Waldman:
The new Republican "theory" of democracy:

GOP wins: "Mandate! Elections have consequences!"
GOP loses: "Tyranny! Fascism! Revolution! Secession!"

Video from a friend:
Tina took a bit of video when we were performing for Danny's photography show at Tully's, during the U-District ArtWalk.

Observe my great big paniers! (And yes, we're performing an Elizabethan song, while mostly wearing 18th century - eh, che cosa farai?)

Hooray! Phil and Kaja - and Cheyenne - are up for a Hugo!

So, of course, more folks are figuring out that they can pre-order the book. This is very good. :)

Fox News takes it to the next level.
I.e. They start completely fabricating their "news".

From Media Matters:
Summary: Fox News' Martha MacCallum claimed that "after weeks of economic doom and gloom, the Obama administration is now singing a slightly different tune. Take a look at what was said in recent interviews this weekend." Fox News then aired clips of administration officials purportedly giving an optimistic view of the economy, which included video of Joe Biden stating: "The fundamentals of the economy are strong." However, Biden did not make those remarks during an "interview" over the past weekend; he made those remarks at a September 2008 campaign event in which he was criticizing statements by John McCain.

Head below the cut, for the original video of Biden's remarks - from Fox News! )

Quote of the day:
In response to the question: ". . what it is about feeling victimized, and about being in a "battle" and/or a "war," that [the right-wingers] enjoy so much[?]", dzog postulates the following:

"The idea of being resilient, self-sufficient success stories strongly appeals to them, but since this actually works out perfectly for very few people, they experience mental and emotional discordance as they compare the state of their own lives with the ideal or expectation inherent in this philosophy. Reluctant to regard themselves as failures in this light, they seek external scapegoats for their problems. This in turn evolves into a personal perspective of "me against the obstacles", and they therefore, irrespective of their actual position in life, begin to feel oppressed (rather than inadequate) and stymied (rather than humbled). Any narrative of the underdog fighting restrictive authority and destroying it thereafter captures their imagination, but from an ego-centric standpoint of the vindicated pariah, rather than from an altruistic sense of civic duty or heroism. In the end, they become perpetually embattled personalities, fighting their own ghosts and unwilling to accept reality. And all because of a basically unreasonable expectation."

Current Mood: That makes sense.

Quote of the day (yesterday):
At yesterday's White House health care summit, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) said, "We're past the Harry and Louise moment. We're at the Thelma and Louise moment. We're in the car heading for the cliff. Everybody understands that."

For those who missed it, "Harry and Louise" were the couple in an industry PR campaign opposing health care reform in the '90s. Listen with hilarity as the guy complains that by having flat community rating, he's paying $3400 instead of $1200 - a year - for his health insurance (remember, that was back when policies covered everything). Ha ha ha ha ha ha. /bleak laughter

Highlights of the 2009 Venice Costume Competition
One of the big deals for us was attending the Competition for the "Piú bella Maschera del Carnevale". (Note: They use the terms "mask" and "costume" interchangeably, and not all costumes have masks.)

First, part of the winning group - four couples led by Tanja Schulz-Hess, who won the competition in 2007 and 2008 also. This is not a matter of favoritism, rather the opposite. They would really like to see a local win, and Tanja is from Hamburg. . .
Winners

Their theme was "Marco Polo's Journeys".

More costumes below. . . )

Yet more photos:
MeOnTheLoggia

This was taken up on the Loggia of the Basilica of St. Marco, looking out past the Palazzo Ducale to the Bacino - James was standing just below the replicas of the four bronze horses looted from Constantinople when he took this (the real ones are inside, in the museum).
